A Grammatical Dictionary of Botanical Latin

 
Resin, generally lustrous exudats formed in plant secretions, not dissolved in water, such as amber, copals, dammars, mastic, guaiacum (WIII) which are transparent or translucent and yellowish to brown in color; often used in medicines, incense, varnishes, etc.: resina,-ae (s.f.I), abl.sg. resina, nom. pl. resinae, acc. pl. resinas, dat. & abl. pl. resinis [> L. resina,-ae (s.f.I) > Gk. rhEtinE, ‘resin of the pine’]; cf. styrax,-acis (s.m.III); a ‘drop’ of resin or gum may be lacrima,-ae (s.f.I), q.v., ‘tear;’ cf. gutta,-ae (s.f.I), a ‘drop;’ see amber, balsam; see gum; see exsudatum,-i (s.n.II); see lacca,-ae (s.f.I), ladanum,-i (s.n.II); see pitch;

- arbores resina lacea praeditae, trees provided with milky resin.

- arbuscula resinam pelluciditate et colore succinum aemulantem exsudans. (F. Mueller), a small tree exsuding a resin resembling amber in transparancy and color.

- [Gardenia edulis] arbuscula resinam pelluciditate et colore succinum aemulantem exsudans. (F. Mueller), a small tree exsuding a resin resembling amber in clearness and color.

- semina (ex Cav.) resina induta (DeCandolle), seeds (according to Cav.) clothed with resin.

- [Guajacum] resina ex trunco vulnerato copiose defluit, indurata legitur ab incolis (Swartz), the resin pours down abundantly from the trunk when wounded, when it is hardened, it is collected by the natives.
resin-producing, resiniferous, "producing resin" (Fernald): resinifer,-era,-erum (adj.A), resinifluus,-a,-um (adj.A), resiniger,-gera,-gerum (adj.A);

- canales resiniferi, resin ducts; ducti resiniferi, resin ducts.

- inflorescentiis in sicco resiniferis, with inflorescences in the dry state resiniferous.

- [Gardenia edulis] arbórea, resiniflua, inermis (F.Mueller), tree-like, resin-producing.

- calycis foeminei resiniflui lobis deltoideo-ovatis, setalis nullis, stigmate marginato (F.Mueller), with the lobes of the resin-bearing female calyx deltoid-ovate, lacking sepals, with the stigma bordered.

NOTE: ladanifer,-fera,-ferum (adj.A): “bearing ladanum (labdanum), a fragrant resinous juice used in medicine, collected from Cistus” (Stearn 1996).
