A Grammatical Dictionary of Botanical Latin

 
regius,-a,-um (adj.A): royal, regal, kingly or queenly; cf. regalis,-e (adj.B); cf.. imperialis,-e (adj.B).

NOTE: the noun Regia,-ae (s.f.I), q.v.: “(sc. Domus), ‘the Royal Home,’ a royal palace, castle, fortress, residence, the court.

1. royal

- Tancredus Robinsonus: Anglus M. Regius (Mich.), Tancred Robinson (1658-1749) Englishman. M. [= Medicus] Regius, i.e. Royal Physician, i.e. English physician and naturalist and fellow of the Royal College of Physicians.

- PARISIIS, E TYPOGRAPHIA REGIA (Tourn.), at Paris, from the Royal Press.

- Regium Medicorum Collegium, or Collegium Regium Medicorum, Royal College of Physicians.

Botanicus,-i (s.m.II) Regius (adj.A), abl.sg. botanico region: Royal Botanist, the King’s Botanist, Botanist to the King, e.g. (for Charles Plumier) King Louis XIV, of France.

NOTE: abbr. B.R.

- ‘Mi. B. R.' = Minimus Botanicus Regius, or Minim [and] King's Botanist. - ‘Fr. C. Plumier Mi. B. R.,’ Frater [i.e. Friar or Brother] Charles Plumier Minimus [and] Royal Botanist.

NOTE: Minimus refers to the Order of Minims, a Franciscan Holy Order; see frater,-tris (s.m.III); see Minimus,-i (s.m.II).

- Regiae Tuae Celsitudinis (Mich.), of Your Royal Highness.

2. regius

- Professor lingui Graecae Regius (Dill.), Regius Professor of the Greek Language.

- Thomas Shaw, S. T. P. Aulae S. Edm. Principalis & Ling.Gr.Profess. Regius (Dill.), Thomas Shaw, S.T.P. [Sanctae Theologiae Professor], Principal of Aula Sancti Edmundi [that is the Hall of Saint Edmund, Univeristy of Oxford], Regius Professor Linguae Graecae [of the Greek Language]. [Thomas Shaw 1692-1751]

NOTE: Regius Professor: a university professor who has, or had, royal patronage or appointment. United Kingdom and Ireland. The first Regius Professorship was in the field of medicine, and founded by the Scottish King James IV at the University of Aberdeen in 1497 (Wikipedia).

3. sovereign

- Ordo Regius Magistralis Templi Salomonis, Sovereign Magistral Order of the Temple of Solomon [Knights Templar]

- in Castanearum, & Аbietum corticibus per Falterona Моntem, nec non in saltu Regiae Рratolini Villae ad Cerros (Mich.), on the barks of Castanea trees, and Firs throughout Falterone Mountain, also on [Quercus cerris] in the ravine-land of the royal Villa of Pratolinus.

- in Ilicibus, tum in Regio viridario Boboli, tum in ampla semita villae Podii Imperialis perennat (Mich.), it lasts years on Ilexes, once in the Royal Garden of Boboli, then again on the big path of the Imperial villa of Podium.

- Parisiis, apud Joannem Boudot, Regis & Regiae Scientiarum Academiae Typographum, via Jacobaea, ad Solem Aureum. M. DCCIII. Cum Privilegio Regis; at Paris, at the establishment of John Boudot, Typographer [i.e. printer] of the King and of the Royal Academy of Sciences, Jacobea street, at the [sign of the] Golden Sun. 1703. With the special right [i.e. prerogative] of the king.

Note: the king here is the Sun King, Louis IV (1638 – 1715).

Utricularia regia Zamudio & Olvera, in reference to the unusual markings present on the lower lip of the corolla that resemble an inverted crown.
