A Grammatical Dictionary of Botanical Latin

 
Reed (Eng.noun): generally, a tall, monocotyledonous marsh plant with a firm stem; “any of various tall perennial grasses [with slender often jointed stems], especially of the genera Phragmites grass family and Arundo; grass family (Poaceae), having hollow stems and large plumelike panicles and growing in wetlands; any of several similar plants, such as the papyrus; the stalk or culm or stem of any of these plants;” nearly synonymous with ‘cane,’ q.v., or Latin ‘canna,-ae (s.f.I),’ q.v.

NOTE: ‘cane’ plants are more terrestrial than the ‘reeds’ – i.e. plants of wet ground.

NOTE: ‘reeds’ are more grass plants than the ‘rushes,’ plants of Juncaceae and certain sedge species, e.g. Scirpus (Cyperaceae).

Sparganium,-ii (s.n.II): bur-reed (Typhaceae).

Typha,-ae (s.f.I), q.v.: sometimes called a reed, but usually rush, or ‘bulrush.’’

Canna,-ae (s.f.I): a reed, cane

- canna palustris, swamp or marsh reed.

Calamus,-i (s.m.II), abl. sg. calamo, “a reed; any reed-shaped stalk, as in Cyperaceae or Poaceae.” Donax,-acis (s.m.III), abl. sg. donace, a reed or cane, a Cyprus-reed (Lewis & Short). Harundo,-inis (s.f.III), abl. sg. harundine; also arundo,-inis (s.f.III), abl. sg. arundine, the reed, cane; pertaining to reeds: donacinus,-a,-um (adj.A); harundinaceus,-a,-um (adj.A), q.v., arundinaceus,-a,-um (adj.A): of reeds, reedy; like a reed; usually having a hollow stem, like some grasses.

calamifolius,-a,-um (adj.A): with reedlike leaves.

Puccinia arundinacea (on reeds, i.e. Phragmites communis).

reed-bearing, crowned with reeds: harundifer,-fera,-ferum (adj.A), also arundifer,-fera,-ferum (adj.A).
