A Grammatical Dictionary of Botanical Latin

quoad (adv.): with respect to, with regard to, as to; till, until, until that; how far, as far as; “how long; as long as; how far, as far as; so far as, insofar as, as much as” [> L. quo-ad; originally quod-ad = ad quod, ‘how long’ + acc. (Lewis & Short)];

NOTE: although the grammar of qoad is complex, in its botanical usage it seems to be used as a preposition, such as ‘ad,’ followed by an accusative object;

a.

- sunt hujus generis non pauca, quae ad majorem, quoad fieri potuit, perfectionem adducere studui (Swartz), there are not a few of this sort [of this kind], which, as far as can be done, I have devoted [myself] to bring to a greater perfection [i.e. completion].

- Eugeniae psidioidi persimilis, quoad illa non minus Acmenam Kingii simulans, very similar to Eugenia psidioides, so far as that resembles no less Acmena Kingii.

b.

- plantae quoad magnitudinem variantes (Mueller), plants varying with regard to size size.

- quoad formam colorisque intensitatem, with regard to the form and intensity of color.

- flores saepissime dioici, masculi quoad partium numerum symmetrici (DeCandolle), the flowers are most often dioicous, the males are equal as to the number of parts.

- quoad stipitis longitudinem et formam, with respect to the length of the stipe and the shape.

- Grevilleae capillari imperfecte cognitae sane adfinis, quoad flores G. mïmosoidi (F. Mueller), doubtless related to Grevillea capillare, imperfectly understood, as to the flowers, [related] to G. mimosoides.

- Quoad flores foemineas et fructus genuina, quoad flores masculos hactenus ignotos dubia species est Hymenotheca acaciiformis (JaegerSauerb.), as to female flowers and genuine fruit, as to the male flowers thus far unknown Hymanotheca acaciiformis is a doubtful species.

- [Stauranthus] genus (male quoad fabricam baccae et seminis description (B&H), a genus badly described as to the structure of the berry and of the seed.

- pro parte quoad plantam typicam, in part as regards the type plant.

- perigonii quoad formam compagem et colorem diversitas, diversity of the perigon as to shape, structure and color (Stearn).

- quoad rationes longitudinis petalorum, as to the relations in length of petals (Stearn).

- quoad habitum et fabricam internam apotheciorum ad Lecanoram hageni accedit, as to habit and the internal structure of the apothecia it approaches Lecanora hageni (Stearn).

- quoad formam foliorum sat congruens, as to the form of the leaves it is congruent enough.

- foliis 2-3-lobatis quoad frequentiam fere aequis, with the leaves 2-3-lobed as to frequency nearly equal.

- genus quoad calycem et corollam distinctum, a genus distinct with respect to the calyx and corolla.

- species perquam variabilis quoad magnitudinem colorisque in pileo ac stipite intensitatem (S&A), a species thorougly variable as to size and intensity of the color on the pileus and stipe.

- praecedenti quoad notas essentiales sane congruum, habitu autem alienum (F. Mueller), [the genus] as far as the essential features it is well enough congruent with the preceding, by the habit, however, it is different.

A work in progress, presently with preliminary A through R, and S, and with S (in part) through Z essentially completed.
