A Grammatical Dictionary of Botanical Latin

 
quartus,-a,-um (adj.A): fourth; quarta,-ae (s.f.I) (sc. pars) a fourth part, a quarter; see quarto;

- ex illis 2 oligandrae sunt et oligogynae, 1 polyandra et polygyna, quarta intermedia (B&H), of these two are few-anthered and few-pistilled, 1 is polyandrous and polygynous, a fourth is intermediate.

- species 4, quarum 3 austro-Africana;, et quarta late distributa est per Africani borealem, Syriam, Persiani, usque ad Indiani (B&H), species 4, 3 of which are austro-African, and the fourth is broadly distributed throughout boreal Africa, Syria, Persia to as far as India.

- Species 3 in Asia tropica v. Madagascaria crescunt, quarta floribus 4-meris in Africa tropica indicata est verisimiliter Garcinia; species (B&H), species 3 grow in tropical Asia or are Madagascarian, a fourth with flowers in four parts indicated in tropical Africa is probably Garcinia.

- Choisyus haec duo jungit sub nomine Laplaceae, quam, adjecta tertia specie Asiatica cum quarta Cubensi, a Haemocharicle, Salisb., distinguit, sed character nos effugit (B&H), Choisy joins these two [sc. genera] under the name Laplaceae, which, he distinguishes, having added a third Asiatic species with a fourth Cubean one, from Haemocharide, Salisb., but the character [i.e. distinguishing mark] escapes us.

- species nobis notae 4, una Mexicana, altera austro-Africana, tertia in insulis Oceani Pacifici australis crescens, quarta per regiones trópicas utriusque orbis late dispersa (B&H), the species known to us are 4, one Mexican, another south-African, a third growing in the islands of the southern Pacific Ocean, a fourth widely dispersed throughout tropical regions on both sides of the globe.

- Ordo in Subordines 5, ínter se magnopere affines, facile divisus est: quorum quartus et quintus, etsi multis auctoribus pro Ordinibus habiti, a secundo et primo nullis characteribus validis distinguendi sunt (B&H), an order easily divided into 5 suborders that are strongly related among themselves: a fourth and fifth of which, even if maintained by many authors for Orders, are to be distinguished by no valid [i.e. strong] characters [i.e. distinguishing marks] from the second and first.
