A Grammatical Dictionary of Botanical Latin

pruinatus,-a,-um (adj.A), pruinosus,-a,-um (adj.A): characterized or affected by hoar-frost, frosted, q.v. “glistening as though frosted over” (Stearn 1990); pruinose, covered with a pruina, as though covered with frost, conspicuously glaucous; v pruinose: having a waxy powdery secretion on the surface, a “bloom” (Jackson; Fernald 1950); (in mycology) “having a frost-like or flour-like surface covering” (Ainsworth & Bisby); cf. powdered; mealy; waxen, waxy, cereous; see caesius,-a,-um (adj.A), ceraceous,-a,-um (adj.A); cf. nivalis,-e (adj.B): 'snow-like, snowy;' see frosted;

NOTE: Stearn’s definition, “glistening as though frosted over” (Stearn 1990) might suit the Eng. adj. ‘frosted,’ q.v., and the Greek definition glaukos,-E,-on (adj.), “gleaming, silvery (as the sea)” (Liddell & Scott);

- saepe maculis pallescentibus pruinoso-pellucidis aquosis, often with spots pallescent frosted-translucent watery [or clear as water].

- lamellae argillaceae, cinerascente - pruinatae, the lamellae [of the fungus] clay-colored [i.e. yellowish-brown], grayish-pruinate.

- hymenium glabrum, tantillum pruinatum , modice papilligerum, the hymenium glabrous, a little bit pruinate, moderately papilligerous.

- superficie pruinata, with the surface pruinose.

- [fungi] aetate provectiore longitudinaliter rugoso-sulcata, apice albo-pruinata (S&A), with a more advanced age, longitudinally rugose-sulcate [i.e. wrinkled and furrowed], at the apex white-pruinate [i.e. with a powdery bloom].

A work in progress, presently with preliminary A through R, and S, and with S (in part) through Z essentially completed.
