platy-: in Gk. comp., broad, wide [> Gk. platys,-eia,-y (adj.) flat, wide, broad-; also flat, level; “in Greek compound words usually signifies broad, rarely flat” (Stearn 1996); see eury-, wide; Lat. = lat-, lati-; see wide;

- platyacanthus, with broad or wide spines; platyanthus, with broad flowers; platycaulis, with wide stems; platycarphus, with broad husks or chaff (pappus); platycarpus, with broad fruits; platycaulis,-e, with broad (flat) stems; platycentrus, with a broad (flat) spur; platycephalus, with a broad head or heads; platycladus, flat-branched; platyglossus, with a broad tongue; platylepis,-idis, with wide scales; platylobus or platylobatus, with broad lobes; platypetalus, broad-petalled; platyphyllus, broad-leaved; platypodus, with wide (flat) foot or stalk; platypterus, with wide wings; platystomus, with a wide mouth; platyspathus, with a broad spathe; platyspermus, with broad seeds.

Platycarya,-ae (s.f.I), > Gk. platys, broad + karyon, a nut; “from the winged nutlets. Juglandaceae” (Stearn 1996).

Platycerium,-ii (s.n.II), > Gk. platys, broad + keras, a horn; “in allusion to the branched fertile fronds. Polypodiaceae” (Stearn 1996).

Platycodon,-onis (s.m.III), > Gk. platys, broad + KOdOn, a bell; “from the form of the corolla. Campanulaceae” (Stearn 1996).

Platycrater,-eris (s.f.III), > Gk. paltys, broad + kratEr, bowl; “in allusion to the expanded saucer-like calyces of the sterile flowers. Hydrangeaceae.” (Stearn 1996).

Platystemon,-onis (s.m.III), > Gk. platys, broad + stemon, a stamen; “this has broad stamens. Papaveraceae” (Stearn 1996).
