A Grammatical Dictionary of Botanical Latin

Piscidia,-ae (s.f.I) [generic name] ‘Fish-killer’> L. piscis, fish + caedo, cut down, slaughter, kill; “in allusion to use as a fish-poison; formed by analogy with homica, man-killer, murderer. Leguminosae” (Stearn 1996); Piscidia, Linn. The leaves, bark, and twigs are used for the purpose of stupifying fish; whence the name from piscis, a fish, and caedo, to kill. Fabaceae. (Paxton); cf. [homicida,-ae (s.f.I) [homo-caedo] a man-killer, homicide, a murderer]; see -cidus,-a,-um (adj.A).

Piscidia piscipula, the Florida fishpoison tree, Jamaican dogwood or Fishfuddle; the epithet is said to mean ‘little fish.’

A work in progress, presently with preliminary A through R, and S, and with S (in part) through Z essentially completed.
