A Grammatical Dictionary of Botanical Latin

 
paulo (adv.), paullo (adv.): by a little, somewhat, a little, slightly, lightly; cf. parce (adv.) sparingly, moderately; see poorly, slightly; see somewhat;

- stamina paulo supra medium tubo corollae inserta (F. Mueller), the stamens inserted a little above the middle on the tube of the corolla.

- folia 1-2 lin. longa, subtiliter punctata paulo scabriuscula (F. Mueller), the leaves 1-2 lines long, lightly punctate, somewhat rather scabrous.

- semina lineam paulo excedentia (F. Mueller), the seeds slightly exceeding a line.

- magnitudine paulo infra elephantos, in size somewhat less than an elephant.

- filis intermediis paulo laxioribus, with intermediate filaments somewhat more lax.

- substantia pressa aut paullo citius tardiusve pro diverso vigoris gradu, colore pulchre sanguineo tingit, the substance pressed either a little more quickly or slowly depending on the different degree of force, stains with a beautifully blood-red color.

- magnitudo pisi fere vulgaris , aut paullo amplior(S&A), the size of a pea almost commonm or somewhat bigger.

- siliquis paulo brevioribus magis compressis strictissimis enerviis (Boissier), with the siliquas somewhat shorter, more compressed, very strict [i.e. straight and rigid], lacking nerves.

- siliquis erecto-patulis pedicellum hirtum paulo superantibus (Boissier), with the siliquas erect-spreading, somewhat overtopping the hirtous pedicel.

- petalis flavis integris calyce paulo longioribus (Boissier), with the petals yellow, entire somewhat longer than the calyx.

- forma minus regulari, statura paullo majore (S&A), with the form less regular, with the size somewhat larger.

- in ostiolum hemisphaericum , globulo cirrhulove spermatico nigro demum deciduo paullo post coronatum (S&A), into a hemispheric ostiole, crowned with a black reproductive globule or cirrhulus finally deciduous somewhat later.

- foliola duo paullo breviora (Swartz), leaflets two, a little smaller.

- corolla. 5-fida, calyce paullo major (Swartz), the corolla 5-fid, somewhat larger than the calyx.

NOTE: pauce (adv.): ‘few, sparsely,’ is numerical.

NOTE: often associated with comparatives: paullo angustior, somewhat narrower, paulo latius, somewhat wider, paullo longiora, somewhat longer, paulo brevioribus, somewhat shorter.

NOTE: opp. ‘multo’ (adv.): much, by a lot;

- peduniculis multo longioribus (Swartz), with the peduncles a lot longer.
