patens,-entis (part.B); compar. patentior,-ius (adj.B); superl. patentissimus,-a,-um (adj.A): patent; “spreading wide open; as petals from the calyx” (Lindley); patent, spreading, outspread, diverging from the axis at almost 90*; spreading at 45* or more, sometimes used to mean spreading 26-45*; (bryology) “of leaves spreading from stem at an angle of 45* or more” (Magill 1990); (fungi) patent, stretching out; spreading (Ainsworth & Bisby); opp. clausus,-a,-um (part. A), from claudo, to shut something that is open, to close; closed;

patent (Eng.adj.): spreading; patentissimus,-a,-um (adj.A): extremely spread out (Jackson).

- patens vulneri equus, a horse exposed to injury.

- quum luci patens, when exposed to light, open to the light.

- longis morbis senectus, acutis adulescentia magis patet, old age is exposed to to prolonged illnesses, adolescence [i.e. young manhood] to more severe ones.

- pedicellis late patentibus, with the pedicels broadly spreading.

patet: third person sigular present, active, indicative: [he,she] it opens, spreads, is disclosed, appears.

- Comparata descriptione fructus nostra cum icone F. Fili, quam in Schrader Journ. f. d. Bot. III, dedit Cel. Link, omnino patet, hanc speciem ejusdem esse ac Fucum F i 1 u m generis, id quod jam suspicaverunt Cel. Turner et Stackhouse (Agardh), having compared our description of the fruit with the illustration, which the celebrated Link furnished in Schrader Journ.f.d.Bot.III, it completely shows [i.e. demonstrates] this species to be of the same genus as Fucus filus, this which the celebrated Turner and Stackhouse have already suspected.

- [Orchis] nectarium postice sub galea, fornicatum, medio 3-angulare, lateribus loculare, in duo cornua porrecta antice divisum: inter quae meatus patet infundibuliformis in cornu germinis (Swartz), the nectarium postically under a galea [i.e. helmet], arched, in the middle 3-angled, locular on the sides, divided antically into two lengthy horns [i.e. spurs]; between which a funnel-shaped meatus [i.e. passage] opens up into the horn [i.e. spur or calcar] of the ovary.

erecto-patens,-entis (part.B): erecto-patent, “between spreading and erect” [i.e. straight up] (Jackson);

- antherae erecto-patentes (Linn.) the anthers erect-spreading. patenti-incurvus,-a,-um (adj.A): spreading and also incurved (as at the tips);

- [moss] folia e basi erecta amplexicaulia patenti-incurva (C. Muell.), the leaves straight up from the base, clasping the stem, spreading-incurved.

suberectus,-a,-um (adj.A): nearly or almost upright;

- [moss] folia suberecta, subsecunda basi non amiplexicaulia (C. Muell.), leaves nearly upright, somewhat curved, not clasping the stem at the base.

Dryptodon patens, a moss whose leaves are spreading-divergent when wet.
