A Grammatical Dictionary of Botanical Latin

 
parallel, relating to, or designating two or more straight coplanar lines or planes that do not intersect; relating to, or designating curves or surfaces everywhere equidistant: parallelus,-a,-um (adj.A) with ad + acc.;

- lobulis bicoloribus parallelis ad caulem jacentibus, by the bicolored lobules lying parallel to the stem.

- antherarum loculi paralleli contigui, of the anthers the loculi parallel touching.

- bulborum tunicae tandem infibras parallelas apicem versus vel in totum solutae, of the bulbs the tunics at length into fibers parallel towards the tip or entirely breaking up (Stearn).

- semina superficiebus ad axem atque valvas fructus parallelis, seeds with the surfaces to the axis and valves of the fruit parallel.

- loculus parallelus ad axem, loculus parallel with the axis.

- soris in lineis transversalibus parallelis, with the sori in transverse, parallel lines.

- antherae breves, loculis divergentibus v. rarius parallelis.(B&H), anthers short, with locules divergent or more rarely parallal.

- loculis parallclis contiguis, with locules parallel, contiguous; antherae breves, loculis subparallelis v. leviter divergentibus, anthers short, with locules somewhat parallel or lightly divergent.

- cotyledones planae, basi divaricatae, dein parallelae (B&H), the cotyledones plane, divaricate at the base, thenceforth parallel.

- folia nervis parallelis lineata (Swartz), leaves lined with parallel nerves.

NOTE: parallel: “marked by likeness or correspondence ... similar, analogous or interdependent ... readily compared or contrasted” (WIII);

- [Dicranum; moss] D. chlorophylloso soli affine, notis parallelis facile discernibile (C. Muell.), related to Dicranum chlorophyllosum only, [but] easily distinguished by similar [i.e. readily contrasted] characters.

- [Dicranum; moss] A D. grlseo simillimo notis parallelis longe distat (C. Muell.), most similar to D. griseum, [but] by parallel [i.e. readily contrasted] similar characters far distant.

subparallus,-a,-um (adj.A): nearly, slightly or almost parallel;

- antherae breves, loculis subparallelis v. leviter divergentibus (B&H), anthers short, with the locules nearly parallel or slightly divergent [i.e. wide-spreading.
parallel-nerved, -veined: see paralleloneurus,-a,-um (adj.A).
