A Grammatical Dictionary of Botanical Latin

Organ (Eng. Noun), > Gk. organon, “lit., tool, instrument” (WIII), “archaic, “a musical instrument, esp. a wind instrument” (WIII); “a differentiated structure (as a heart, kidney, leaf, flower) in an animal or plant … adapted for the performance of some specific function…; the bodily parts performing a particular function or cooperating in a particular activity” (WIII): organum,-i (s.n.II), abl. sg. organo, nom. & acc. pl. organa [> L. organum,-i (s.n.II) “a mechanical device, instrument; a musical instrument; esp. organum hydraulicum, a water-organ; organum,-i (s.n.II), the water-organ; an organ-pipe” (Glare)]; see apparatus;

Organum,-i (s.n.II) musicum (adj.A), the musical organ (instrument); see musicus,-a,-um (adj.A);

- Tubularia. Orgue de Mer. Tubularia est plantae genus, fere lapideum, ex pluribus tubulis constans, Organi musici aemulum (Tourn.), Tubularia is a class of plant, almost stone-like, composed of many tubules, comparable to the musical Organ [= dat.sg.]; orgue (French) = organ (musical instrument).

(medical) Pars, gen.sg. partis (s.f.III), nom. & acc. pl. partes, the organs, the parts

- organa affixionis, organs of attachment.

- organa reproductionis, organs of reproduction (Stearn 1983).

- organa sporangifera sub apice frondis exorientia, sporangium-bearing organs arising below the apex of the frond (Stearn 1983).

- organa vegetativa, organs associated wtih the growth of the plant, not the reproduction.

- saepe marginibus laminae in organa photosynthetica evolventibus, often with the margins of the lamina developing into photosynthetic organs.

- Vera biologia nititur perfecta anatomica cognitione organorum quorum opere vita peragitur. Hoc respectu plantae conveniunt cum animalibus. (DozyMoek), true biology rests upon complete anatomical knowledge or the organs by the work of which life is accomplished. In this respect, plants correspond with animals.

- [Aroideae] organa neutra inter sexus magna, porrecta et incurva, (B&H), the neuter organs among the sexes large, prolonged and incurved.

- [algae] magna itaque in eo inest differentia coniocystarum et sporidiorum, quod licet utraque organa singula individua tantum generant, est compositio utriusque longe diversa, sporidia quodammodo simplicia, coniocystae ex pluribus compositae (Agardh), thus contained in this there is a great difference of the coniocysts and sporidia, because granted that either of the two individual organs each only procreates, the composition of either one is far different, the sporidia in a certain degree are simple, the coniocysts compound from many [i.e. distinct parts].

- [algae] nulla hic per stadium vegetationis cellulae divisio, neque generationum multiplicatio et diversitas, quum eadem cellula successive thalli et organi fructificatorii (goniocytii vel sporocytii, vulgo „sporangii") dignitate induatur (Braun), there is no division of the cell here [i.e. in this case] throughout the course of growth, nor a multiplication of generations and diversity [i.e. variety of generations], when the same cell successively may be adorned with the dignity [i.e. worthy function] of a thallus and of a fructificatory organ (of a goniocyte or a sporocyte, commonly [called] the ‘sporangium’).

- [medical: Lichen fontanus major “the great water liverwort” (Dill.)] laudatur, inquit Cæsalpinus, a Recentioribus ad epatis calidam intemperiem, nam refrigerat & siccat, ac tollit obstructiones ob partium tenuitatem (Dill.), it is recommended, says Caesalpinus, by modern people (authors), for a hot [i.e. inflammed] disorder of the liver, for it cools down [i.e. relieves inflammation] and dries [it] up, and it takes away obstructions due to the thinness [i.e. emaciation] of the parts [i.e. organs].

NOTE: constituent, “containing,” parts of plants: organa elementaria (adj.A), ‘elementary organs,’ also partes similares (adj.B), “small parts, common to the whole vegetable [i.e. plant], and appearing to be the organic elements of which the vegetable is composed” (S.Gray).

Organa (pl.n.II) elementaria (adj.A), ‘elementary organs,’ also partes similares (adj.B), “small parts, common to the whole vegetable [i.e. plant], and appearing to be the organic elements of which the vegetable is composed” (S.Gray).

Organum essentiale (adj.B), abl. sg. organo essentiali: essential organ, “those which are absolutely necessary, stamens and pistils” (Jackson).

Organa fructificationis [gen.sg. fructification), the organs of fructification; see also fructificatio,-onis (s.f.III);

- (algae) organa fructificationis et in specie cellulae, quibus Algae et plantae cryptogamae in genere propagantur, diversissimis nominibus nuncupantur, plerisque non satis definitis et vario sensu adhibitis (Braun), the organs of fructification and in the kind of cell, by which the Algae and cryptogamous plants are propagated in their kind, are called by very diverse names, and many are not satisfactorily defined and are used in a varying sense. - (algae) termini sequentes imprimis usitati sunt: spora, sporidium, sporidiolum, spermatium, speirema, sphaerospora, zoospora, gonidium, gemmidium, conidium, gongylus, spermatozoidium, antherozoidìum etc. (Braun), the following terms are primarily used: spore, sporidium, sporidiole, spermatium, speirema, sphaerospora, zoospora, gonidium, gemmidium, conidium, gongylus, spermatozoidium, antherozoidìum etc.

A work in progress, presently with preliminary A through R, and S, and with S (in part) through Z essentially completed.
