A Grammatical Dictionary of Botanical Latin

 
oed-, oedo-: in Gk. comp. tumid, swollen, q.v. [> Gk. oidos (s.n.II), note gender) “a swelling, tumor” (Liddell & Scott); cf. oidma,-atos (s.n.II): a swelling, as of the sea; - oedocarpus, with swollen fruit; oedocaulis, with swollen stem; oedocephalus, with swollen head or tip; oedopodius, with swollen stalk (e.g. seta in mosses or even the ‘neck’ at the base of the capsule); oedoporicus, with swollen pores; oedopyxis, with a swollen pyxis (e.g. as with a goiter).

Andina oedocostata, with a swollen costa; Andinella oedocostata, a moss with a swollen, multistratose costa; Arundinaria oedogonata (with culms swollen at the base); Bryum oedoneurum.

Oedema,-atis (s.n.II), q.v., a swelling.

[fungus] Oedocephalum,-i (s.n.II), abl.sg. Oedocephalo, a genus of fungi with a swelling at the end, or tip of the conidiospores.

Oedogonium (genus of green algae: swollen [> oidos, swelling, tumor + gonos, offspring, seed +-ium) in reference to the swollen cells of the oogonia (female sexual organs) on long unbranched filaments.

Oedostemon,-onis (s.m.III), abl.sg. oedostemone: in epithets (noun, often used in apposition to the generic name): with a swollen stamen.

Englerina oedostemon, gen.sg. Englerinae oedostemonis; Tapinarthus oedostemon.

Eulophia oedoplectron (Orchidaceae), “with a unique leaf-like flower.”

Mimosa oedoclada, > Gk. oedos, swollen + clados, branch, shoot] a plant with the leaf axes and peduncles with swollen bases.

Oedochloa,-ae (s.f.I) > Gk. oedos, swollen + chloa, grass (Poaceae), a grass with convex swellings in the spikelets.

Eurhynchium oedogonium, [Hypnum oedocalyx; Hypnum oedogonium]; Polygala oedophylla; Sematophyllum oedophysidium; Thamniopsis oedodontia; Webera oedoneura.

(the fungus taxa): Oedipus, gen.sg. Oedipodis (s.m.III); Oedogoniomyces, Oedomyces, Oedothea.

[moss] Oedipodium,-ii (s.n.II), abl.sg. Oedipodio, “gouty-moss;” alluding to the swollen, i.e. long and fleshy capsule neck (Oedipodiaceae) [> Gk. oidos, a swelling, tumor + pous, gen.sg. podos, foot + dim. –ium: podium, platform]; see –pus, gen.sg. –podis.

NOTE: not oedopodium; however: Sciuro-hypnum oedopodium (Mitt.) Ignatov et Huttunen. Since Gk. oidos is rendered oedos in Latin, the connecting vowel is often –o- in Gk. compounds, and –i- in Latin ones.

NOTE: Gk. oidipous,-podos (s.m.III) = Lat. oedipus, gen.sg. oedipodis (s.m.III), i.e. the swollen-footed [note –i- connecting vowel]; [oidi- swollen + pous foot]; cf. Gk. oidEma,-atos (s.n.III): a swelling, tumor (Liddell & Scott); see –pus, gen.sg. –podis.

Oedipus,-podis (s.m.III), Latin irregular declension, i.e. gen.sg. Oedipodos/Oedipodis/Oedipi; acc. Oedipem; abl. Oedipode/Oedipo: “a king of Thebes, the son of Laius and Jocasta; who solved the riddle of the Sphinx, hence, a solver of enigmas (after Lewis & Short) [> Gk. oidipous,-podos (s.m.III), ‘the swollen-footed’ > oidi-, swollen + pous, foot]; see –pus,-podis (s.m.III).
