A Grammatical Dictionary of Botanical Latin

novellus,-a,-um (adj.A): young, q.v., (of plants and animals; of vegetation) young, tender; of or pertaining to recent times, new; of a new type or kind, novel.

Novella,-ae (s.f.II), sc. vitis: “a vine newly planted; a shoot, sucker);” see vine; cf. novellatus,-a,-um (part.A): > novello,-avi,-atum 1. “to till new fields, to set out new vines” (Lewis & Short); “to plant nurseries” (Glare)];

- arbores partibus novellis saepe lepidotis v. stellato-tomentellis (B&H), trees with the young parts often lepidote [i.e. scaley] or stellate-tomentellous.

- frutices ramulis novellis paginaque inferiore foliorum tomento adpresse stellato-canescentibus v. rufescentibus (B&H), the fruits with young branchlets and the lower surface of the leaves appressedly stellate-canescent or rufescent.

- flores ante folia v. cum foliis novellis nascentes (B&H), flowers arising before the leaves or with the young leaves.

- folia alterna, pinnata v. 2-3-pinnata, novella et inflorescentia saepe stellato-tomentosa, foliolis petiolulatis dentatis v. serratis (B&H), leaves alternate, pinnate or 2-3-pinnate, the young ones and the inflorescence often stellate-tomentose with the leaflets somewhat petiolulate, dentate or serrate.

- arbor parva, glaberrima, ramulis novellis pubescentibus (B&H), a small tree, completely glabrous, with the young branchlets pubescent.

- frutex subscandens, ramulis teretibus, novellis paniculis petiolisque pube rufa tomentellis (B&H), a somewhat climbing [i.e. subscandent] shrub, with the branchlets terete, the young panicles and petioles tomentellous with a rufous [i.e. reddish] pubescence.

- arbores glabrae, partibus novellis interdum gummosis (B&H), glabrous trees, with the new parts sometimes gummy [i.e. full of gum].

- [SPHACELLARIA; algae] Sph. Bertiana Denot., anne ramenta novella a Cladostepho propullantia? (Agardh.), is Sphacellaria Bertiana Denot., rather not new ramenta budding from Cladostephus?

- A superiore pagina hujus frondis primariae surgunt frondes novellae pateraeformes stipite brevissimo affixae, in pianta exsiccata umbilicum mentiente (Agardh), young fronds arise from the upper side of this primary frond, saucer-shaped, attached by a very short stipe [i.e. stalk] - in the dried up plant resembling an umbilicus [i.e. a projection in the middle of plants].

- [Laminaeieae; algae] planta juvenilis vegetatione praecipue terminali evolvitur, unde frons novella L. digitatae L. Saccharinam omnino aemulat, et frondes primariae Macrocystidis erectae et angustae formantur (Agardh), from the beginning the juvenile plant primarily is developed from terminal plant growth, for which reason the young frond of L. digitatae completely copies L. Saccharina and the primary fronds of Macrocystis is formed erect and narrow.

A work in progress, presently with preliminary A through R, and S, and with S (in part) through Z essentially completed.
