A Grammatical Dictionary of Botanical Latin

 
nivalis,-e (adj.B): “growing near snow, or appearing at a season when snow is on the ground” (Lindley); pertaining to snow, snowy, snow-like; cf. pruinatus,-a,-um (adj.A), 'frosted;' cf. glacialis,-e (adj.B): frozen, glacial; of or appropriate to ice; characterized by ice;

- Mount Hood, in rivulo nivali, Mount Hood, in snow-rivulet.

- e planitiebus in regiones nivales ascendentes (Mueller), from the plains ascending into snowy regions.

- in terra, arboribus et aquis, saepe amphibie, viventes per orbem terrarum totum in locis humidis vix nivalibus (Mueller), amphibiously living on land, trees and water, often amphibiously living throughout the whole world of lands in moist places, scarcely snowy.

- locos humidos nivales v. turfosos amantes (Mueller), loving moist snowy or peaty places.

- ad limitem nivalem (DeCandolle), at the snow [sc. perpetual] boundary.
