A Grammatical Dictionary of Botanical Latin

Nemathecium, nemathece; “(> Gk. nEma, a thread + thEkE, a case), a wart-like elevation of the surface in some Algae containing antheridia and paraphyses or cystocarps” (Jackson); a wartlike prominence on the thallus of a red alga containing tetraspores, antheridia, or cystocarps (Merriam-Webster); A kind of fructification on certain red algae, consisting of an external mass of filaments that separate into tetraspores (Wiktionary): nemathecium,-ii (s.n.II), abl. sg. nemathecio; see cystocarpium,-ii (s.n.II); see tetraspore;

- nemathecia itaque esse organa luxurianti vegetatione a normali functione aversa et partibus accessoriis ( Pericarpio ) tota constituta existimaverim (Agardh), and so I [would/could have] judged the nemathecia to be organs with luxuriant growth, in opposition to their normal function, and all constituted of accessory parts (the pericarpium).

- Genus ita constitutum Phyllophorae proximum mihi videtur, nematheciis hemisphaericis et frondi semiimmersis (Agardh), the genus so constituted seems to me nearest to Phyllophora, with the nemathecia hemisphaeric and nearly embedded in the frond.

- (algae) hinc ad basin foliolorum prolificantium residua nonduni transformata nematheciorum observantur et organa formant, quae a Greville ut nemathecia generis descripta fueruut (Agardh), hence at the base of the proliferating leaflets the residue of the not yet transformed nemathecia are observed and the organs formed which by Greville had been described as the nemathecia of the genus.

- (algae) nemathecia juxta marginem serie utrinque singula et in utraque pagina disposita,pedunculo brevi suffulta, sectionem verticalem fere reniformem offerentia (Agardh), the nemathecia near the margin on both sides in a single row and deposited on each side, subtended by a short peduncle, displaying a vertical section almost reniform.

- [algae] nemathecia rugoso-echinata, marginalia vel axillaria, obovata frondis colore, interiore cellulis obscurioribus, versus peripheriam cellulis radiantibus densissime stipatis constituta (Agardh), nemathecia rugose-echinate, marginal or axillary, obovate, with the color of the frond, the inner ones with less distinct cells, toward the periphery constituted of very densely stipate [i.e. crowded close together], radiating cells.

A work in progress, presently with preliminary A through R, and S, and with S (in part) through Z essentially completed.
