A Grammatical Dictionary of Botanical Latin

 
my-, myo-: in Gk. comp. mouse [> Gk. mys, gen.sg. myos (s.m.III), q.v., mouse or rat]; = Lat. mus, q.v., gen. sg. muris (s.c.III);

- myagrum,-i (s.n.II), from the Gk. mys, mouse, and agra, trap (Fernald 1950).

- myosurus,-a,-um (adj.A) like a mouse-tail: Baeospora myosura (Fr.) Singer, a mushroom.

- Myoseris, from Gk. mys, a mouse + seris, succory. Asteraceae (Paxton).

- Myosotidium,-ii (s.n.II), the diminutive of Myosotis,-idis (s.f.III).

- Myosoton,-i Moench: name from Greek mys, mouse, and ous, ear, from the soft leaves (Fernald 1950).

- Myosotis,-idis L. (s.f.III), from the gen. sg. of mys + ous, ear, "from the short and soft leaves in some species" (Fernald 1950); epithets end in –a (M. alpine, M. asiatica, M. capitate, M. caespitosa; Myosotis, from mys, myos, a mouse and otos, an ear; “fancied resemblance in the leaves” Boraginaceae (Paxton).

- myosuroides: resembling a mouse’s tail;

- Myosurus, L. 'Mousetail' (Ranunculaceae) > Greek myos, of a mouse (gen.sg.) and oura, a tail; due to the central column of ovaries in the flower; “from mys, a mouse, and oura, a tail; the seeds are seated on a spiked receptacle, and appear exactly like the tail of a mouse, ‘Mouse-tail.’ Ranunculaceae” (Paxton).

- Isothecium myosuroides (from the Greek noun mys, gen.sg. myos, mouse and oura, a tail and the Greek adj. suffix -eidEs,-es, resembling; like a mouse’s tail, from the secondary stem branches often flagellate-attenuate to stoloniform).

Hypnum myosuroides brevius & crassius, capsulis cernuis. “The lesser thick Mouse-tail Hypnum, with stooping Heads” (Dill.).

[zoology] subgenera of the genus Mus, gen.sg. muris (s.m.III):

Coelomys,-myos (s.m.III), Nannomys,-myos (s.m.III), Pyromys,-myos (s.m.III). subgenus Muriculus,-i (s.m.III).
