A Grammatical Dictionary of Botanical Latin

murinus,-a,-um (adj.A): 1. of or relating to walls [> L. murus,-i (s.m.II) a wall].

Hordeum murinum L., Wall Barley.

2. of or relating to mice; mouse-colored, mousey-gray, pale brownish-gray, “gray, with a touch of red” (Lindley) [> L. mus, gen. sg. muris (s.c.III), a mouse];

- color murinus, a mousey-gray color.

- color et mollities exacte pellis murinae (S&A), precisely the color and softness of a mouse skin.

- fungus bombycinus murini coloris, e fimo felino, tenuissìmis capillis (Dill.), a silky-haired fungus of a mousy (gray)-color, from cat excrement, with very delicate hairs.

- fungus lamellis murinis, pediculo pariter albo, gemino, & perаngusto anulo [sic] cincto (Mich.), a fungus with the lamellae mouse-colored [i.e. pale brownish-gray], with the pedicel uniformly white, paired, and encircled with a very narrow annulus.

NOTE: Lewis and Short indicate that Hordeum murinum is, perhaps erroneously, 'Mouse Barley.'

NOTE: it is possible that the epithets of the following species all refer to walls.

Aristidia murina; Aloe murina; Barbula murina; Begonia murina; Erica murina; Tortula marina; Vilfa murina.

Agropyron murinum; Critesion murinum; Elaphoglossum murinum; Hordeum murinum; Oncidium murinum; Piper murinum; Solanum murinum.

Andropogon murinus; Astragals murinus; Rubus murinus; Senecio murinus.

A work in progress, presently with preliminary A through R, and S, and with S (in part) through Z essentially completed.
