A Grammatical Dictionary of Botanical Latin

monopetalus,-a,-um (adj.A), monopetalicus,-a,-um (adj.A): monopetalous, having petals joined in one, gamopetalous; “having all the petals united by their edges” (Lindley); “1. literally one-petalled; 2. gamopetalous, where the corolla is composed of several petals laterally united” (Jackson); see gamopetalus,-a,-um (adj.A);

“When the corolla consists of only one piece, as in the monopetalous corolla, the whole corolla, in the Linnaean sense of the word, is a petal” (Barton).

- flores simplices monopetali anomali, etiamsi pauciores, multiformes tamen sunt: nec singulari nomine comprehendi possunt (Tourn.), anomalous [i.e. irregular] monopetalous [i.e. gamopetalous] simple [i.e. not compound] flowers, even if fewer, however, they are of many shapes: they cannot be comprehended with a single name.

- RHABARBARUM est plantae genus, flore monopetalo, campaniformi & multifido (Tourn.), rhabarbarum is a kind of plant with a monopetalous [i.e. with petals joined by their edges] flower, campaniform [i.e. bell-shaped] and cut into many segments.

- [Hemerocallis flavus] Hemerocallis radice tuberosa, corollis monopetalis luteis, a Hemerocalalis with a tuberous root, with the yellow corollas monopetalous.

- [Hydrophyllum virginianum] dentariae facie planta monopetalos [sic], fructu rotundo monopyreno (Linn.), a plant with the appearance of Dentaria, monopetalous [i.e. with petals united, the flower like a bell], with the fruit round, monopyrenous [with one pyrene].

gamopetalous, q.v., “having the petals more or less united” (Fernald 1950), with petals united from base upwards: gamopetalus,-a,-um (adj.A);

sympetalus,-a,-um (adj.A), q.v., sympetalicus,-a,-um (adj.A): sympetalous, “(obsol.) a growing of the stamens to the petals, so as to produce the appearance of a monopetalous corolla; as in the Mallow” (Lindley)

A work in progress, presently with preliminary A through R, and S, and with S (in part) through Z essentially completed.
