A Grammatical Dictionary of Botanical Latin

 
Mitra,-ae (s.f.I): “1. the galea of a corolla; 2. the thick rounded pileus of some Fungi” (Jackson); a kind of cap or hat [> L. mitra,-ae (s.f.I) “an oriental headdress, fastened with ribbons under the chin; > Gk. mitra” (Glare); see galea;

- Pétala 6, biseriatim valvata, exteriora ovalia, interiora unguiculata, laminis in mitram cohaerentibus (B&H), petals 6, valvate in two rows, the outer oval, the inner clawed, the laminae fused into a cap.

- Tribe Mitrephoreae; Oxymitra; [Goniothalamus] Pétala 6, biseriatim valvata, crasso-coriacea, exteriora plana, ovata v. elongata, interiora circa genitalia in mitram conicam arcte coalita, basi in unguem latam angustata (B&H), petals 6, biseriately valvate, thick-leathery, the outer [petals] flat, ovate or elongate, the inner around the genitalia tightly fused into a conical cap, at the base narrowed into a broad claw.
