A Grammatical Dictionary of Botanical Latin

 
marginatus,-a,-um (part.B): bordered, edged; “furnished with an edge of a different texture from the remainder of the body” (Lindley); “with a distinct border” (Fernald 1950) [> L. margino,-avi,-atum, 1. to border, enclose with a margin, to provide a margin, as a road] (frequently used by B&H and other botanists for seeds in Cruciferae);

NOTE: (in fungi) “having a well-marked edge” (Ainsworth & Bisby); (in fungi) “(of the pileus) having a distinctly marked border; (of the bulb of the stipe) having a circular ridge on the exterior, upper angle where the universal veil was attached” (S&D);

rotundo-bulbosus,-a,-um (adj.A): rounded-bulbous, (in fungi) “(of a stipe) more or less completely rounded and not marginate” (S&D);

- [fungus] stipite solido crasso bulboso, bulbo depresso-marginato (S&A), with the stipe solid, thick, bulbous, with the bulb depressed, marginate.

- folia limbis marginata rubris, the leaves edged with a red border.

crasso-marginatus,-a,-um (part.A): thickly or densely bordered or edged;

- [moss] folii lamina infra medium evanescens crasso-marginata (C. Mueller), the lamina of the leaf vanishing below the middle, thickly-bordered.

NOTE: limbatus (adj.A) indicates a border of contrasting color that is broader than indicated by 'marginatus.’

NOTE: emarginatus,-a,-um (part.A): notched, usually at the tip of a structure;

- petala lineari-spathulata, emarginata (B&H), petals linear-spathulate, notched.

NOTE: immarginatus,-a,-um (adj.A): immarginate, without a distinct margin, border or rim; ”having no rim or edge” (Lindley);

- siliqua teretiuscula, gracilis, seminibus 1-seriatis immarginatis (B&H), silique nearly terete, slender, with the seeds in one series, lacking a border.
