A Grammatical Dictionary of Botanical Latin

malpighiaceus,-a,-um (adj.A): relating to or resembling the genus Malpighia;

- pili malphighiacei, hairs attached at the middle with two stiff pointed radiating branches; cf. dibrachiatus (Stearn).

- folia ad marginem trichomata minuta malpighiacea gerentia, leaves on the margin bearing minute, malpighiaceous trichomes.

- utrinque pilis adpressis malpighiaceis hic illic nonnunquam satis regulariter conspersa, on both surfaces with hairs appressed malpighiaceous here and there sometimes fairly regularly sprinkled (Stearn).

Pilus (s.m.II) malpighiaceus, abl. sg. pilo malpighiaceo, nom. pl. pili malpighiacei: malpighiaceous hairs, “hairs which are straight and attached by the middle” (Fernald 1950).

NOTE: Malpighiaceae: Arbores v. frútices, rarius fruticuli, saepe scandentes; pili dum adsint vulgo appressi, medio affixi, saepe pilis mollioribus v. rarius rigidioribus immixti (B&H), trees or shrubs more rarely shrublets, often climbing; the hairs when present commonly appressed, attached in the middle, often intermixed with softer or more rarely more rigid hairs.

A work in progress, presently with preliminary A through R, and S, and with S (in part) through Z essentially completed.
