A Grammatical Dictionary of Botanical Latin

 
magellanicus,-a,-um (adj.A): magellanic, of or relating to the Strait of Magellan; the general area of the southern hemisphere relating to the Strait of Magellan; widely travelled and “succeeding in an untried quest of global importance or dimension” [“Definitions” anonymous submission Aug. 31, 2017 (viewed April 25, 2019)] [> Ferdinand Magellan (1480-1521), a Portuguese explorer and navigator, after whom the Strait of Magellan was named, who was the first European to see and name the Pacific Ocean, credited with the first circumnavigation of the globe]. Many species of Berberidaceae were found in the vicinity of the Strait (DeCandolle), and also in other families.

NOTE: The Strait or Straits of Magellan, near the southern tip of South America, is a natural passage between the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans, separating mainland South America to the north, and Tierra del Fuego to the south.

- fretum Magellanicum (DeCandolle), the Strait of Magellan.

- in nemoribus montosis ad fretum Magellanicum (DeCandolle), in montain woodland places at the Strait of Magellan.

- ad sylvarum margines freti Magellanici (DeCandolle), at the edges of the forests of the Strait of Magellan.

- in montibus humentibus freti Magellanici (DeCandolle), in wet mountains of the Strait of Magellan.

- in Freti Magellanici vallibus soli expositis (DeCandolle), at the Magellanic Strait in valleys exposed to the sun.

- in Chili et ad Fretum Magellanicum (DeCandolle),in Chile and at the Strait of Magellan.

- Berberideae pleraeque, in zona temperata hemisphaerae borealis habitant et in montosis stant: nonnullae tamen in America australi usque ad plagas Magellanicas repertae fuerunt (DeCandolle), very many Berberideae dwell in the temperate zone of the northern hemisphere and are located in mountainous places: however some in South America have been found as far as the Magellanic region.
