A Grammatical Dictionary of Botanical Latin

 
Luna,-ae (s.f.I), abl. sg. luna: the moon; a month;

- luna dimidiata (adj.A), a half-moon, a crescent.

- luna plena (adj.A): full moon.

- luna bicornis (adj.B), the two-horned or new moon.

- luna corniculans, crescent- or horn-shaped moon; “the new moon” (Lewis & Short).

- luna corniculata, the new ‘horned’ crescent moon (Lewis & Short).

- luna cornuta (adj.A), the horned, i.e. new moon.

- luna crescens,-entis (part.A), the growing or increasing moon.

- luna decrescens,-entis (part.A), the decreasing or waning moon; damnum,-i (s.n.II) lunae, the loss of the moon, i.e. the waning of the moon.

- luna gibbosa (adj.A), gibbous moon [gibbous, “more swollen in one place than in another”] when the (disc of the) moon appears more swollen on one side than the other.

1. luna gibbosa decrescens: waning gibbous moon, when sunlit portion decreases (wanes) after the full, enters the waning gibbous phase (still lighted more than half).

2. luna gibbosa crescens: waxing gibbous moon, sunlit portion still increasing after the first quarter, lighted more than half.

Moon, little: lunula,-ae (s.f.I).
