A Grammatical Dictionary of Botanical Latin

Limon,-onis (s.f.III), abl. sg. limone, nom. & acc. pl. limones, gen. pl. limonum; also limo,-onis (s.f.III), abl.sg. limone, gen.pl. limonum; [pharmaceutical Latin] the lemon (also Brit. Mediev.Lat. (Howlett).

- cum succo limonum, with the juice of lemons (Brit. Mediev. Lat.; Howlett).

- aqua limonis, water of lemon, lemon-water.

Lemon: Citrus × limon, often given as C. limon (L.) Burm.f.; C. limonium Risso, C. limonia Osbeck, C. medica var. limonium Brandis; note the genus Citrus is a feminine noun; see citrus,-i (s.f.II).

(Pharm.) limon,-onis (s.f.III), abl.sg. limone: a lemon [Citrus Medica var b. Limonum] (Bennitt).

- acidus sapor gustum quoque penetrat & tenuitate ferit, sed citra ullum sensum caloris. Tale maxime in aceto deprehenditur, deinde etiam in succo mali cytrii [sic], limonum, &c. (Ray), ‘acidic’ is a taste and also goes as far as a flavor, and strikes [i.e.the mouth] with a thinness/fineness [i.e. less sharp (i.e. than ‘acer’)], but just short of any sense of heat. It is of such a kind as is mostly detected in sour wine [i.e. vinegar], and then also in the juice of the citron, of lemons &c.

NOTE: Malum citreum, a citron (Glare).

CITRUS LIMONUM (Risso) fructuum oblongorum cortice tenuissimo, pulpa acidissima (DeCandolle), with the rind of the oblong fruits very thin, with the pulp very sour; [limonum, gen. pl. limon,-onis (s.f.III).

(Pharm.) Limon,-onis (s.f.IIII), abl.sg. limone: a lemon [Citrus Medica var b. Limonum] (Bennitt).

(Pharm.) Limonis cortex siccatus, dried lemon-peel (Bennitt).

Citrus Medica Limonum: “lemon oil.”

Citrus medica var. dulcis, the Sweet Lemon, ‘sweet,’ i.e. with fruit lacking acidity in its pulp and juice.

A work in progress, presently with preliminary A through R, and S, and with S (in part) through Z essentially completed.
