A Grammatical Dictionary of Botanical Latin

 
curved and length:breadth usually 2:1 (Stearn): ovalis,-e (adj.B); see elliptic; 'applies to plane surface;’ a regular oval; of a plane surface, having the outline of an ellipse, oblong but with sides and ends convex; note that an ‘egg shape,’ broadest toward the base, is ovate, q.v.;

- vesiculae ovales, oblongae, inanes, fuscae (Agardh), the vesicles ovale, oblong, empty, blackish-brown.

- folia ovalia, leaves oval; foliis ovalibus, with oval leaves.

- capsula ovalis, capsule oval; capsulae ovales, capsules oval.

- differt foliis ovalibus ovatisve obtusis (DeCandolle), it differs by the leaves oval [i.e. broadly elliptic] or ovate [egg-shaped, broadest toward the base], obtuse.

- (moss) folia e basi plus minus oblonga lato-ovalia vel spathulata vel lingulata vel ovalia (Mueller), leaves from the base more or less oblong, widely oval or tongue-shaped or oval.

- (moss) seta longa, capsula ovali-elliptica sulcata (Hooker), seta long, the capsule oval- [i.e. with curved sides] elliptic [i.e. with parallel sides] sulcate.

- carpella in capitulum ovalem v. oblongum subcoalita, (B&H), carpels almost coalesced into an oval [i.e. with curved sides] or oblong [i.e. with parallel sides] capitulum.

- petala 6, ovalia v. rotundata, aequalia (B&H), petals 6, oval or rounded, equal.

- in fructum multilocularem ovalem v. globosum coalita (B&H), fused into an oval or globose multilocular fruit.

- stamina, connectivo ultra lóculos ovali oblongo v. truncate (B&H), stamens with the connective beyond the locules oval, oblong or truncate [i.e. with the apex squarred].

- drupae ovales, styli cicatrice subterminali (B&H), drupes oval, with the scar of the style just below the apex.

Heterosperma ovale; Pluchea ovalis

NOTE: the connecting vowel is with an -i-: Hieracium ovaliceps (with an oval head);Panicum ovalifolium; Hieracium ovaliforme; Hieracium ovalifrons; Argyrophyllum ovali-ellipticum; Chromolaena ovaliflora.
