A Grammatical Dictionary of Botanical Latin

leguminosus,-a,-um (adj.A): legume-bearing; leguminous, “pertaining to a legume or to the Leguminosae” (Fernald 1950) [Fabaceae];

- Odor Leguminosorum, sed foetidus (Swartz), the odor of legumes, but with an ill smell.

- [Classis X. de herbis flore polypetalo, Papilionaceo] florem leguminosum a Papilionis forma Papilionaceum appellavit Cordus (Tourn.), [Class X [ten] regarding herbs with a polypetalous papilionaceous [i.e. butterfly-like] flower] Cordus has called the leguminous flower Papilionaceous from [i.e. ‘on account of’] the shape of a Butterfly [i.e. its butterfly-shape, papilioniform].

Leguminosae, old family name of Fabaceae.
