A Grammatical Dictionary of Botanical Latin

 
laxe (adv.); compar. laxius (adv.); superl. laxissime (adv.): loosely, widely, spaciously, at wide intervals, sparsely; slightly, loosely (opp. tightly) [> L. laxus,-a,-um (adj.A), q.v.; cf. leve (adv.), slightly, loosely; opp. arcte (adv.) closely, tightly; opp. confertim (adv.) ‘compactly, close together, densely;’ see loosely;

- [algae] rigidiusculis et parum gelatinosis, unde levius [=laxius] tantum chartae adhaeret (Agardh), somewhat rigid and slightly gelatinous, whence it adheres only more lightly to the paper.

- foliis laxe pubescentibus, with leaves sparsely pubescent.

- hyphae laxe intricatae, hyphae loosely intangled.

- elateres bispiri, spiris in medio confertim, versus apicem laxe tortis, the elaters two-spiralled, with the coils in the middle compactly, toward the apex loosely twisted.

- [Sphagnum molluscum Bruch; moss] laxe cespitosum elatum gracillimum molluscum, amoene flavidum, ramis remotis tenuibus parce geminatis laxe foliosis subdeflexis flaccidis curviusculis (C. Mueller), loosely caesitose [i.e. matted, bedded] elevated, very slender, soft, pleasantly yellowish, with the branches remote [i.e. distant], thin, moderately paired, sparsely leaved, slightly deflexed, flaccid, somewhat curved.

- [Populus] amenta laxiora quam in Salice, foeminea interdum pedicellis elongatis laxe racemiformia (B&H), aments looser than in Salix, the female aments sometimes loosely racemiform with elongate pedicels.

- trichomatibus laxe intricatis varie curvatis, with the filaments loosely interwoven, variously curved.

- flores extus sericei, cymosi, cymis nunc abbreviatis dense congestis, nunc laxius multifloris pedunculatis (B&H), the outer flowers silky, cymose, with the cymes sometimes shortened, densely compact, sometimes more openly pedunculate, many-flowered.

- caulis laxissime foliosus, stem very sparsely foliose.

- [hepatic] capsula magna plus 3 mm. longa purpurea. Elateres attenuati 200 um spiris duplicatis validis teretibus laxe tortis (Steph.), the capsule large, more than 3 mm. long, purple. The elaters narrow, 200 um, loosely twisted into paired, terete, well-developed spirals.

laxiuscule (adv.): somewhat loosely, rather widely;

- Grimmia pygmaeus, “laxiuscule pulvinata humillima” (C. Mueller), somewhat loosely pulvinate, extremely low-growing.
