A Grammatical Dictionary of Botanical Latin

 
lavandulaceus,-a,-um (adj.A), lavandulus,-a,-um (adj.A): lavender-violet; lavender color, “pale blue, with a slight mixture of gray” (Lindley); “pale bluish gray; the color of the flowers of Lavandula vera, DC.” (Jackson); see “Violet (color);”

NOTE: the spelling is lavand- in Latin, but lavend- in English.

NOTE: caesius,-a,-um (adj.A), q.v.: “lavender color” (Lindley).

NOTE: “Sea Lavender” “any of a genus (Limonium) of chiefly perennial herbs of the plumbago family with small flowers and basal leaves” (Merriam-Webster); a “maritime” or coastal plant.

Lavandula,-ae (s.f.I), Lavender, > L. lavo, to wash; “from ‘lavo,’ to wash; in allusion to the use made of its distilled water. Lamiaceae” (Paxton); “from its use in soaps and toiletries of various kinds. Labiatae.” (Stearn 1996); see lavans,-antis (part.B), “washing away or off;” “widely cultivated for its narrow aromatic leaves and spikes of lilac-purple flowers which are dried and used in sachets” (WIII).

Dampiera,-ae (s.f.I) lavandulacea.

Lavandula officinalis.

lavender (Eng.adj.): “a variable color averaging a pale purple that is bluer and deeper than wistaria ...” (WIII).

Lilac (Eng.noun): a plant of the genus Syringa, usu. European S. vulgaris. Also “a variable color averaging a moderate purple that is redder and paler than heliotrope, paler than purple ...” (WIII); also “a moderate pink to light grayish red” WIII).

lavandulifolius,-a,-um (adj.A): “with lavender-like leaves” (Stearn 1996).

Phoma lavandulae Gabotto, a fungus that produces the disease 'lavender shab.'

NOTE: the spelling is lavand- in Latin, but lavend- in English; ‘lavandulae’ is gen.sg. of the genus Lavandula, which is its host.
