A Grammatical Dictionary of Botanical Latin

 
Key; key, a series of statements of contrasting characters arranged to facilitate identification. For kinds, see R.H.S. Dict. Gard. Suppl. 251-3 (1956); (Stearn): clavis,-is (s.f.III), acc. sg. clavem, dat. sg. clavi, abl sg. clave nom. & acc. pl. claves, gen. pl. clavum, dat. & abl. pl. clavibus [> L. clavis,-is (s.f.III), abl. sg. clave) a key];

- clavis artificialis ad stirpes másculas solas aptata (B&H), an artificial key suitable to male plants only.

- in clavi: in the key (dat. sg.).
Key, little: clavicula,-ae (s.f.I), q.v.
Key-fruit, an indehiscent winged fruit: samara,-ae (s.f.I), abl. sg. samara; see samara.
