A Grammatical Dictionary of Botanical Latin

July: julius,-a,-um (adj.A); (mensis,-is (s.m.III) Julius, abl. sing. (mense) Julio, ‘the month of Julius (the name of a Roman gens or family, closely associated with that of Julius Caesar);

die 5 Julii, on the fifth day of July.

- alga die 20 Julii lecta, alga on day 20 of Julii collected.

- laete vigentem habuimus Julio, we have had it joyfully flourishing in July.

- semel, ineunte Julio , in pyris sub dio projectis (S&A), one time, July coming in [i.e. at the beginning of July], on a pear tree out-stretched under the open sky.

- exeunte Julio, at the ending of July, July going out, departing.

- Julio, in January.

- [Octospora bulbosa] Ad fossas sylvarum udas e. g. aquaeductus piscinae pineti lindenthalensis hic Lipsiae, iam Iulii initio post pluviosam tempestatem hinc inde prodit (Hedw.; Adumb.), it comes forth here and there on the wet ditches of forests, e.g. the conduit of the fishpoool of the Lindenthal [a suburb of Leipzig] pine-association here in Leipzig, already at the beginning of July after rainy weather.

NOTE: Julius is an adjective modifying the noun mensis,-is (s.m.II), abl. sg. mense, which is seldom expressed, but only the adjective.

NOTE the specific "time when" or "within which" something happens is expressed by the ablative without a preposition.

NOTE: Julius,-ii (s.m.II), abl. sg. Julio was also a substantive for the month of July (Lewis & Short).

A work in progress, presently with preliminary A through R, and S, and with S (in part) through Z essentially completed.
