A Grammatical Dictionary of Botanical Latin

 
ithy-: in Gk. comp. straight-, upright [> Gk. adj. ithys, itheia, ithy, straight, direct; morally straight, upright, true; = Lat. rectus]; syn. = Gk. euthy-, q.v.; syn. Gk. orth-, ortho-, q.v., straight, erect; see rectus,-a,-um (part.A); see straight; opp. Gk. scoli-, scolio-, q.v., curved, bent; opp. Gk. campylo-, bent, curved;

- ithyphallicus (adj.A), honoring the Greek and Roman god of revelry Bacchus, with an erect or tumid penis; ithyphyllus, with straight or erect leaves.

- ithyphyllus,-a,-um (adj.A): ithyphyllous, with straight or erect leaves; “straight and stiff-leaved” (Jackson).

[moss] Bartramia ithyphyllous, from the Greek adj. ἰθύς (ithys), straight, erect, upright, and the noun φύλλον (phyllon), a leaf, for the straight, rigid leaves resembling a bundle of twigs).

Rebutia ithyacantha, with straight spines (Cactaceae); Actinocephalus ithyphyllum; Polypodium ithycarpum, with straight or upright fruit.

Ithyphallus impudicus, a stinkhorn fungus. Hieracium ithyphyton. Acrocarpous moss: Bartramia ithyphylla, in reference to the erect, straight stiff leaves “resembling a bundle of sticks” (C&A); Paepalanthus ithyphallus (a pipe-wort); Weissia ithyphylla.
