A Grammatical Dictionary of Botanical Latin

Insect, bug (Eng.nouns): insectum (s.n.II), gen.sg. insecti, abl. sg. insecto, nom. pl. insecti, gen. pl. insectorum, dat.& abl.pl. insectis; see flea, fly; ant; see beetle; insects (Eng.pl.noun);

- insecta herbatica, a grass- or herb-eating insect, a herbivorous insect.

- ovaria insectorum ictu in cornu excrescentia, the ovaries by the sting of insects growing out into a horn.

- insectis petalas et sepalas ut alimentum manducariantibus, with insects chewing petals and sepals as though it was food.

- (scorpio) solus (insectorum) [sic] habet in cauda spiculum, the scorpion alone of insects has a sting in its tail.

- insectum bipenne (adj.B), a two-winged insect.

- [fungi] perithecium nimirum dimidiatum, postquam laxe aliquamdiu fungillo incubuit, prorsus jam solutum ac deciduum elytrum quoddam insecti coleopteri minuti nigri solitarium amissum hinc illinc haud inepte imitatur (S&A), when the perithecium is doubtless halved, after that it lies loosely in on the fungillus for a while, when at last entirely dissolved and deciduous on this side and on that, it not ineptly resembles a kind of minute black solitary fallen elytron of a coleopteron insect.

- [Gymnopodes limacinus; fungus] avide a limacibus insectisque propter saporem mitem dulcem appetita, saepissime semidevorata offenditur (S&A), sought greedily after by slugs and insects because the taste is succulent, sweet [i.e. not bitter], most often found half devoured.

- [Agaricus; fungus] Totius fungi caro alba firma esculenta videtur, sapore praedita miti grato Boleti fere edulis: quamobrem ab insectis limacibusque cupide conquisita, perforata ac semivorata haud raro offenditur (S&A), the firm white flesh of the entire fungus seems fit for eating, since, provided with the pleasing [i.e. succulent], attractive taste of a Bolete, it is almost edible: wherefore being sought out eagerly by insects and slugs, it is not uncommonly found perforated [i.e. pierced with holes] and half eaten.

- Confervæ vilissimæ filtris aptæ sunt, quædam a piscibus & avibus maritimis devorantur, aliæ nidum præbent & foetificationi conchyliorum aliorumque insectorum aquaticorum inserviunt, sicuti terrestres Musci domicilia insectis terrestribus dant (Dill.), Conferva most common, suited for [felted mats of interwoven fibers], certain ones eagerly consumed by fishes and sea birds, others provide for a nest and are serviceable for the spawning of shellfish, and of different aquatic insects, just as terrestrial mosses supply the dwelling places for terrestrial insects.

Conopeum,-i (s.n.II), abl. sg. conopeo, also conopium,-ii (s.n.II): “a net of fine gauze, used originally by the Egyptians, esp. about the bed, as a protection against gnats, etc.; mosquito-curtains; (Engl.) canopy, > Gk. kOnOpeion (s.n.II), [or kOnOpion (s.n.II)] a couch with mosquito-curtains > Gk. KOnOps,-Opos (s.m.III), a gnat, mosquito (Liddell & Scott) = L. culex,-icis].

Ictus,-us (s.m.IV), q.v., abl. sg. ictu, nom. & acc. pl. ictum, gen. pl. ictuum, dat. & abl. pl. ictibus: bite, sting, stab, i.e., an injury; see sting.

Spiculum,-i (s.n.II), abl. sg. spiculo: the sting of an insect.

insect- (Eng.prefix):

in L. comp., insect-, insecti-;

- insecticola,-ae (s. common gender,I), abl.sg. insecticola, dwelling on insects.

- insectivorus,-a,-um (adj.A), insect-eating.

in Gk. comp., entom-, entomo-;

- entomophilus,-a,-um (adj.A), q.v., insect-loving, pollinated by insects; entomogenus, living on insects; entomophagus, insect-eating; entomophobicus, fearing insects, with adaptations to repell insects.

A work in progress, presently with preliminary A through R, and S, and with S (in part) through Z essentially completed.
