A Grammatical Dictionary of Botanical Latin

 
imus,-a,-um (adj.A): lowest, lowermost, bottommost; the lowest part of a thing; “farthest below or from the surface, deepest or innermost; the depths or recesses of; last in order or succession, final” (Glare); see infimus,-a,-um (adj.A); one of the two superlatives of inferus,-a,-um (adj.A), q.v., ‘that which is below, lower, underneath;’ opp. summus,-a,-um (adj. A), uppermost, highest; see also infimus,-a,-um (adj.A);

(with respect to time or order) the last, final;

- imus mensis, the last [i.e. final] month.

(with respect to status in society): the lowermost, the humblest;

- pax deorum supremis imisque, the peace of the gods for the highest and the lowest [i.e. in society].

Imum,-i (s.n.II), abl.sg. imo: the last, the end (Lewis & Short); also, the bottom, the lowermost part or place; the depth; the base (i.e. the bottom); opp. summum,-i (s.n.II), abl.sg. summo, the top surface, the top; what is at the top, the highest place in anything, the highest place, summit;

- ab imo, from the bottom.

- ab imo ad summum, from the (very) bottom to the (very) top.

- in summo ad imum ciliis flavidis, at the apex to the base with yellowish cilia.

- thecis saepe emergentibus vel imo immersis, with thecae often emergent or immersed in the lowest part.

Imi,-orum (pl.m.II)the lowest, most humble; in pl. the depths, the bottom;

+ gen.; - ima maris, the depths of the sea, the bottom of the sea.

- ima montis, the lowermost of the mountain, i.e. the foot, roots or bases of the mountain.

Ima,-orum (pl.n.II), abl.pl. imis: the underworld.

NOTE: not to be confused with immo (adv.), q.v., also imo (adv.), an incorrect application of immo (adv.) (Lewis & Short).

- in ima parte sуlvae aucupariae DD. Sacchettinorum non longe Florentia, nuncupata il Pollajo (Mich.), in the deepest part of the bird-catching forest of the Lords [DD. = domini] of Saccettini, not far from Florence, called ‘il Pollajo’ [i.e. The Hen-House].

- locus erat paulatim ab imo acclivis, the place was little by little sloping upwards from the bottom.

- lobi segmentorum imorum divergentes obtusi (F. Muell.), the lobes of the lowest divisions divergent, obtuse.

- stam. 5 imae corollae inserta (DeCandolle), stamens 5, inserted on the lowest corolla.

- capsula ima basi circumcirca rupens, capsule at the very base all around breaking [ i.e. circumscissile].

- stamina hypogyna, filamentis ima basi connatis, stamens hypogynous, with filaments connate at the very base.

- stamina imo corollae tubo inserta, stamens at bottom of the corolla tube inserted.

- ab imis unguibus usque ad verticem summum, from top to toe, Cicero, (from the lowest toe to the tip top).

- stamina potius ima basi brevissime connata quam disco cupuliformi inserta dicenda (B&H), the stamens should rather be said to be very shortly fused at the very lowest base than to be inserted on a cup-shaped disc.

- [algae] caulis ima basi teres, dein anceps, lateribus convexis 1-2 lineas latus (Agardh), stem at the lowermost base rounded-cylindric, ultimately two-edged [i.e. flattened], with the sides convex, 1-2 lines [2.1-4.2 mm] wide.
