A Grammatical Dictionary of Botanical Latin

 
imberbis,-e (adj.B), imberbus,-a,-um (adj.A): “having no hairs” (Lindley), hairless, glabrous; beardless, “without a beard” (Stearn 1996); in mosses lacking hair-points (awns) on the leaf apices [> im + barba,-ae (s.f.I) beard]; opp. barbatus,-a,-um (adj.A), bearded; see smooth;

- A Viola papilionacea Pursh. differt imprimis petalo infimo imberbi (DeCandolle), from Viola papillionacea Pursh. it differs primarily by the lowest petal beardless.

- carina imberbis alis corollinis calycinisque multo brevior (DeCandolle), the keel lacking a beard, much shorter than the corolline and calycine wings.

- petalis latissimis imberbibus (DeCandolle), with the petals very wide, without a beard.

- [mosses] folia caulina inferiora imberbia, superior brevius pilifera (C. Mueller), lower stem leaves beardless [i.e. having no awns], the upper more shortly piliferous.

- [mosses] folia innovationum imberbia s. mucronata, apice incurva (C. Mueller), leaves of the innovations lacking awns or mucronate, incurved at the apex.

glaber, glabra, glabrum (adj.A): “glabrous, smooth, especially not pubescent nor hairy” (Fernald 1950);

laevis,-e (adj.B), smooth, without hair, beardless.

NOTE: the genus Berberis,-idis (B. thunbergii) is from "the Arabic name of the fruit" (Fernald 1950).

(moss) Hedwigia imberbis; Tortula imberbis
