A Grammatical Dictionary of Botanical Latin

hybridus,-a,-um (adj.A): “mixed; hybrid” (Stearn 1996); implying, as an epithet, the species was a product of parents of different species. In the older literature, the epithet hybridus,-a,-um (adj.A) had a similar implication as paradoxus,-a,-um (adj.A), ‘marvellous, strange, contrary to all expectation, paradoxical.’

adulterinus,-a,-um (adj.A): adulterous, not genuine, false forged; as an epithet to designate hybrid.

spurius,-a,-um (adj.A): spurious; of illegitimate, i.e. bastard, birth; in epithets, used to designate hybrid origin.

Dicranella hybrida, Bryum hybridum, acrocarpous mosses; Trifolium hybridum L., “hybrid; from an earlier misconception” (Fernald 1950); Morchella hybrida, a mushroom.

A work in progress, presently with preliminary A through R, and S, and with S (in part) through Z essentially completed.
