A Grammatical Dictionary of Botanical Latin

 
hy-, hyo-: in Gk. comp. swine-, pig-, boar-, sow- [> Gk. hys, gen. sg. hyos (s.m. or f. II): in Greek, a swine, pig, boar or sow = Lat. sus, gen. sg. suis (s.n.III), q.v.; see sus, gen.sg. suis (s.m/f.III); see hyo-.

Hyoscyamus L. Henbane, Hogbean > Gk. hyos, of a hog, and cyamos, bean 'because poisonous to swine; likewise to humans' (Fernald 1950) (Solanaceae). NOTE: not to be confused with hyo-, q.v.: in Gk. comp. ‘rain.’ NOTE: not to be confused with hy-,hyo-, q.v.: in Gk. comp. the shape of the Greek letter upsilon.
hy-, hyo-: in Gk. comp. the shape of the Greek letter upsilon. In the anatomy of bones, it refers to an arched structure that is u-shaped (see hyoid), that is, the lower case Greek letter upsilon; see hyoid; see hyo-.

NOTE: not to be confused with hyo-, q.v.: in Gk. comp. ‘rain.’
