A Grammatical Dictionary of Botanical Latin

 
hortensis,-e (adj.B): pertaining to gardens, raised in a garden, horticultural; cf. sylvestris,-e (adj.B), ‘wild; of forests’; cf. arvensis,-e (adj.B), ‘agricultural, of cultivated fields;’ see horticultural;

- specim. sylvestre videtur vix palmare demissnm, hortense erectum 2-3-pedale (DeCandolle), a wild specimen seen low-lying, scarcely three inches high, a horticultural [specimen] erect, 2-3-feet high.

- genus ad plantas 2 hortenses conditum, e charactere manco, valde dubium remanet (B&H), a genus based on 2 garden plants, from a defective character, remains strongly doubtful.

- in foliis Pyri Mali hortensis haud infrequens. (S&A), on the leaves of cultivated Pyrus Malus not infrequent.

- habitat super foliis fruticis vel sylvestris vel hortensis passim , neutiquam rara (S&A), it dwells above on the leaves of shrubs either of forest [i.e. wild] or of gardens all over, not at all rare.

- incolit folia Polygoni Convolvuli arvensis hortensisque passim haud infrequens (S&A), it inhabits the leaves of Polygonum Convolvulus of cultivated fields [i.e. agricultural] and horticultural everywhere not at all infrequent.

- Anemone palmata: var.? flore plena. A. hortensis latifolia, etc. (DeCandolle), Anemone palmata: perhaps a variety with a double flower. A. hortensis, latifolia, etc.

- Ranunculus gramineus, var. hortensis, foliis lineari lanceolatis, flore pleno (DeCandolle), var. hortensis [i.e. horticultural variety] with leaves linear-lanceolate, with a double flower.

- sunt variationes hortenses parum notabiles, var. gynantherus, antheris nempe in carpella mutatis (DeCandolle), there are somewhat notable horticultural variations: var. gynantherus, with the anthers, of course, altered into carpels.
