A Grammatical Dictionary of Botanical Latin

 
Horreum, gen. sg. horrei, abl. sg. horreo: a storehouse esp. for the storage of grain, a barn, granary; a warehouse; syn. sirus, granarium, cumera; said also of the burrows of ants and beehives (Lewis & Short); “a type of public warehouse used during the ancient Roman period. ... the giant Horrea Galbae in Rome were used not only to store grain but also olive oil, wine, foodstuff ...” “a standard feature of Roman towns, cities and forts throughout the empire” (‘Horreum,’ Wikipedia 2019); see storehouse.

Horrea subterranea, cellars.

Horrea candelaria; the storehouses for wax.

Horrea chartaria, the storehouses for paper.

Horrea piperataria, the storehouses for pepper.

- Extra portam Divi Міniatis inter muscos tempore praedicto, & in moeniorum urbis nostrae rimis, ante horrea in loco dicto l’Uccello etiam erumpit (Mich.), beyond the gate of Saint Miniatus among mosses in the time already mentioned, and in the cracks in the (fortified) walls of our city [i.e. Florence], before the granary in the place called ‘l’Uccello’ it also sprouts out.

- Аd Cerros circa Paternum Vallis-Umbrosae horreum, in loco ‘Monte Реscoli (Mich.), on Turkey-oaks [Quercus laevis] around the Paternal Warehouse of Vallis Umbrosa, in the place [called] ‘Monte Pescoli.’

NOTE: Vallis Umbrosa, a valley of Tuscany 18 miles from Tuscany.

- Сirca Castrum Florentinum ad Fraxinos, & non longe а Раterni horreo, in loco ‘Monte Pescoli,’ prope Vallem Umbrosam (Mich.), around the Castrum Florentinum on Fraxinus [i.e. Ash trees], and not far from the Paternum warehouse, in the place called ‘Monte Pescoli,’ near the Vallis Umbrosa.

NOTE: Castrum Florentinum: also Castellum Florentinum, an Italian town and municipality, Florence = Castrum Timiniani
