A Grammatical Dictionary of Botanical Latin

 
heli-, helio-: in Gk. comp. sun [> Gk. (h)Elios, (s.m.II), the sun; Latin sol, gen. sg. solis (s.m.III)]; see sun;

- heliophilus (adj.A), sun-loving, growing in sunny places, photophilous.

- heliophyton,-i (s.n.II) a plant thriving in or tolerating full sun.

- turning toward or with the sun: heliotropicus,-a,-um (adj.A).

Helianthemum, from Gk. helios, the sun, and anthemum, flower DO ANTHEMUM; to do Helianthus, Sunflower, from Gk helios, the sun, and anthos, a flower; Heliopsis, from Gk. helios, sun, and opsis, appearance, from the resemblance to the sunflower (Helianthus); Heliotropium L. Turnsole, Heliotrope, "The ancient name, from the Greek helios, the sun, and tope, a turn; ancient writers believing that it turns toward the sun in flowering" (Fernald 1950).
