A Grammatical Dictionary of Botanical Latin

Grus, gen.sg. gruis (s.c.III), dat.sg. grui, acc.sg. gruem, abl.sg. grue nom.& acc.pl. grues, gen. pl. gruum, dat.& abl.pl. gruibus: a crane (bird); a type of seige weapon = the corvus (cf. corvus,-i (s.m.II), abl. sg. corvo: classical = a raven) [> L. grus,gen.sg. gruis a crane; regarded by the Romans as a delicacy; a besieging machine, battering-ram, called also corvus” (Lewis & Short; cf. grui, ere: “the note of the crane, to crunk, crunkle”]; see bird.

NOTE: the adj. ‘gruinalis’ perhaps refers to this noun:

- Geranium gruinale (Tourn.)

Crane: “any bird of the family Gruidae (order Gruiformes) consisting of a small group of tall wading birds ...”” (WIII); see grus, gen.sg. cruis (s.c.III).

- Geranium Batrachioides, Collum Gruis Germanorum (Tourn.), the Bird’s Neck of the Germans.

A work in progress, presently with preliminary A through R, and S, and with S (in part) through Z essentially completed.
