A Grammatical Dictionary of Botanical Latin

 
glareosus,-a,-um (adj.A): glareal; pertaining to or full of gravel, growing in gravelly places (such as the pebbles on beaches), the deposits of glacial outwash; the debris on talus slopes; the gravel laid down on footpaths; “term employed by H.C. Watson for those plants which grow on dry exposed ground, chiefly gravel or sand; glareose, frequenting gravel” (Jackson); see scree;

NOTE: this term often denotes stoney material along river-courses.

Gravel (Eng.noun): “a loose or unconsolidated material consisting wholly or chiefly of rounded fragments of rock ranging in size from 2 mm to a meter or more in diameter; pebbly gound, pebbly shore (obsolete: sand) (WIII).

Scree (Eng.noun): “a heap of stones or rocky debris lying on a slope or at the base of a cliff: talus (WIII).

- in summis alpibus Helvetiae, ubi in glareosis alp. Sanensium 1801 legit Bridel, ad rupes humidiusculas semidecompositas (C. Muell.), on the alpine summits of Switzerland, where Bridel collected in in 1801 on the scree of mount Sanensis, on somewhat moist half-disintegrated cliffs.

- via (s.f.I) glareosa, gravel road.

- semita glareosa, gravel footpath or lane.

- nascitur locis gramineis æque ac gramine destitutis, in ambulacris hortorum glareosis (Dill.), it arises in grassy places as well as places destitute of grass, in the gravelly walkways of gardens.

- in ambulacris Horti Oxoniensis glareæ & lapillis arcte adnascitur (Dill.), in the walkways of Oxford Garden it tightly grows on gravel and pebbles.

- Boechera glareosa Dorn, name due to its habit of growing on barren gravel pavement from disintegrating conglomerate outcrops.

- habitat ad loca glareosa et petrosa in summis Sierra Negra prope Rio Preto, Minas Gerais, it inhabits the Sierra Negra on the highest places near the Rio Preto, Minas Gerais in gravelly and rocky places.

- ad ripas glareosas fluviorum Victoriae, Hooker's Creek et Sturt's Creek, eorum originem versus, nuspiam frequens (F.Muell.), on the gravelly beaches of the small streams of Victoria, Hooker’s Creek and Sturt’s Creek, toward their headwaters, nowhere frequent.

- hab. in summis jugis Sierra Nevada in fissuris rupium et in glareosis glacialibus (Boissier), it grows on the summits on the ranges in the Sierra Nevada in chinks of rocks and in places full of glacial gravel.

- habitat ad loca glareosa et petrosa in summis Serra Negra prope Rio Preto, it grows in gravelly and stony places in the summits in the Serra Negra near Rio Preto.

- Hab. in summis jugis Sierra Nevada in fissuris rupium et in glareosis glacialibus (Boissier), it grows in the heights of the Sierra Nevada ridges in the fissures of rocks and in gravelly glacial [places].

- in sylvaticis glareosis et in ericetis tam siccis quam turfosis per totam Europam et Americam septentrionalem (C. Muell.), in forested gravel and in heath-lands both dry and boggy throughout the whole of Europe and North America.

- Brasilia; Serra d'Estrella supra saxa rivorum et in solo glareoso (C. Muell.), Brasilia; Serra d’Estrella upon the stones of streams and in gravelly soil.

- in glareosis secus fluviorum ripas, in gravelly places along the banks of rivers.

- ad fluminis Nicholson ripas glareosas prope sinum Gulf of Carpentaria (F. Muell.), on the gravelly banks of the river Nicholson near the gulf of Carpentaria.
