A Grammatical Dictionary of Botanical Latin

gladiatus,-a,-um (adj.A): gladiate; “sword-shaped;; in the form of a sword-blade, either straight or somewhat curved” (Fernald 1950) [> L. gladius,-i s.m.II. The ensis is longer than the gladius, which is a 'short sword.']; see ensatus, ensiformis;

- folia anguste lineari-gladiata v. subulata, lanceolata (B&H), the leaves narrowly linear-gladiate or subulate, lanceolate.

- segmentis elongatis tereti-compressis aversis estriatis rarius planis gladiato-linearibus (F. Mueller), with the segments elongate, terete-compressed, [the side that is turned away] without striations, more rarely flat, gladiate-linear.

Canavalia gladiata, DC.; Didactyle gladiata, Lindl.

Gladiolus,-i (s.m.II), dim. of gladius, a small sword or gladius, because of the sword-like or ensiform leaves (Iridaceae); [Gladiolus] folia ensiformia v. anguste linearia (B&H), the leaves ensiform or narrowly linear.

A work in progress, presently with preliminary A through R, and S, and with S (in part) through Z essentially completed.
