A Grammatical Dictionary of Botanical Latin

Gibbus,-i (s.m.II), abl. sg. gibbo: a hunch or hump on the back; = gibber,-eris (s.m.III), q.v., “a pouch-like enlargement of the base of a calyx, corolla, &c.” (Lindley);

- pileo umbonato gibbo resupinato cupulaeformi (S&A), with the pileus umbonate with a resupinate hump, cupuliform.

- pinnulae pinnaeque juniores interiore latere subcanaliculato laeves, exteriore autem singula série gibborum subcontigue cristatae, gibbis minutissimis diametrum pinnulae fere altis a basi latiore pyramidatim attenuatis fere apiculatis basi parum distantibus (Agardh), the younger pinnules and pinnae smooth, with the inner side somewhat channeled, the outer, however, nearly continuously crested with a single series of humps, with the humps very tiny, almost the diameter of the pinnule high, from the base wider, pyramidately attenuate, almost apiculate, at the base somewhat distant.

- keramidia fere sphaerica, basi paulo latiora, apice perforato gibbis similibus cristato (Agardh), the keramidia [i.e. cystocarpia] almost spherical, at the base somewhat wider, at the perforated apex crested with similar humps.

NOTE: when the gibbus appears to be on the outer (dorsal) side of a hooded sepal or petal (Lamiaceae, Scrophulariaceae) it may be synonymous with galea.
gibbus,-a,-um (adj.A): gibbous, q.v.

A work in progress, presently with preliminary A through R, and S, and with S (in part) through Z essentially completed.
