A Grammatical Dictionary of Botanical Latin

 
genuinus,-a,-um (adj.A): “genuine, real, authentic, hence applied to type element of a species” (Stearn), e.g. typical variety; genuine, authentic (Lewis & Short); innate, native, natural [> L. gigno; (archaic) geno), to bear, beget,bring forth, produce; to cause]; opp. ‘not genuine:’ adulterinus,-a,-um (adj.A); see authentic; cf. hybrid; see false;

Eng. adj.: genuine: conforming precisely to its name or description: true; of or relating to the original stock; (obsol.) not foreign: native, natural (after WIII).

NOTE: also genuinus,-a,-um (adj.A): of or belonging to the cheek; dentes genuini jaw-teeth, back-teeth (Lewis & Short); see gena,-ae (s.f.I).

- [alga] cum signo dubii a Greville ad Grateloupiam relata, me judice, generis sp. genuina (Agardh), [although] with the sign [i.e. mark] of uncertainty related by Greville to Grateloupia, in my judgement, it is a genuine species of the genus.

-[Pelargonium] medium fere inter P. peltatum et elegans, sed ex Sweet videtur species genuina (DeCandolle), almost (inter)mediate between P. peltatum and [P.] elegans, but according to Sweet, the species appears to be genuine.

- species inter Argophyllos genuinos sympatricos leguminis forma distans, species among the genuine sympatric Argophylli by the form of the legume distant.

- var. affine, locis iisdem cum planta genuina, the var. affine, in the same places with the genuine plant [= typical variety] (BSG).

- forma genuina, the authentic or 'real' form, or shape, i.e. the typical shape (as opposed to varieties of shapes in one species).

- sed stromate genuino carens, but lacking a genuine stroma.

- Quoad flores foemineas et fructus genuina, quoad flores masculos hactenus ignotos dubia species est Hymenotheca acaciiformis (JaegerSauerb.), as to female flowers and genuine fruit, as to the male flowers thus far unknown Hymanotheca acaciiformis is a doubtful species.

- species genuinae biovulatae 5, in Asia tropica crescentes. (B&H), authentic biovulate species 5, growing in tropical Asia.

- genera genuina omnesque immortales species, facilitate cum maxima ac celeriter, detegere queant tirones (Necker), the authentic [i.e. genuine or true] genera, and all the imperishable species, with the greatest ease and swiftly the amateurs might be able to sweep away.

- Species genuinae biovulatae 5, in Asia tropica crescentes. His tamen addendae, etsi in sectionem alteram colligendae, GUATTERIAE gerontogeae fere 25, quarum una Australasica, ceterae Asiaticae (B&H), the authentic biovulate species are 5, growing in tropic Asia. However, to be added to these, even if collected into another section, are the almost 25 [species of] old world Guaterria, one of which is Australasian, the rest Asiatic.

- A Polyalthiis genuinis non differunt nisi ovulis solitariis nec geminis (B&H), they do not differ from genuine Polyalthia [sc. species] except the ovules are solitary, not paired.

- Historia Muscorum in qua circiter sexcentae species veteres et novae ad sua genera relatae describuntur et iconibus genuinis illustrantur (Dill.), Historia Muscorum [i.e. an account of the mosses] in which almost 600 species, old and new are described, ascribed to a particular [i.e. characteristic] genus and illustrated with authentic [i.e. applied to type element of a species or to an actual species] illustrations.
