A Grammatical Dictionary of Botanical Latin

general (Eng.adj.), “involving or belonging to the whole of a body, group, class, or type; applicable or relevant to the whole rather than to a limited part, group, or section; involving or belonging to every member of a class, kind, or group; applicable or pertinent to the majority of individuals involved; characteristic of the majority; prevalent, usual; concerned or dealing with universal rather than particular aspects” (WIII); common: generalis,-e (adj.B), communis,-e (adj.B);

NOTE: in e.g. Compositae (i.e. the receptacle) and Umbelliferae (i.e. the umbel), ‘general,’ ‘common’ and ‘universal’ structures are the primary ones. Partial structures are the secondary ones within the primary structure.

- nonnunquam capitula ipsa in receptáculo generali sessilia, in glomerulum densum capituliformem involucro generali cinctum v. nudum aggregata. (B&H), [sometimes] the capitula themselves are sessile on a common receptacle, aggregated into into a dense head-like glomerule surrounded with a common involucre, or naked.

- index abecedarius generalis, general alphabetical index.

- Eremophila Woollsiana adspectu generali satis quadrat in seriem, quae E. resinosa, Behrii, brevifolia (Pseudopholidia brevifolia A. D. C.) et crassifolia formatur (F. Mueller), Eremophila woollsiana quite agrees in general aspect in the series, which is formed with E. resinosa, Behrii, brevifolia (Pseudopholidia brevifolia A. D. C.) and crassifolia.

- hinc in posterum aptiora vocabula essent quaerenda, ubi generaliori termino familias aut ordines diuersos .... comprehendere volueris (Hedwig), hence for the future let there be sought a more appropriate vocabulary, when you will have wanted to comprehend different families or orders by a more general term [i.e. technical word].

- Ordo parvus, consensu generali ad vicinitatem Saxifragearum (verisimiliter recte) ascriptus, sed nullo arcte affinis. (B&H), a small order, by general consensus ascribed to the vicinity of the Saxifragaceae (probably correctly), but closely related to nothing. TO CHWECK

Canna generalis, the common flowering canna.

NOTE: Minas Gerais (Brasilia), ‘minas’ is the plural of mina, a mine [> Medieval Latin mina,-ae (s.f.I), a mine]. ‘Gerais’ is Portuguese for ‘general,’ hence Minas Gerais is the general mines, from the former name of the colonial province “Minas dos Matos Gerais,” perhaps “general mines of the woods;”

- (moss) Patria. Brasilia in Minis Generalibus: Martius (Mueller), native land: Brasilia in the general mines (Minae Generales): Martius [collector].

- (moss) Patria. Brasilia, Villa Rica in Minis generalibus [sic]: Martius, Aprili (Mueller), native land: Brasilia in Minae generales: Martius [collector], in April.

A work in progress, presently with preliminary A through R, and S, and with S (in part) through Z essentially completed.
