Gener,-eri (s.m.II, irreg.) [partly a 3d declension: acc. pl. generos, dat. pl. generibus]: a daughter’s husband, a (prospective) son-in-law (Lewis & Short); also a daughter’s bridegroom; the husband of a granddaughter or great granddaughter;

NOTE: the dat. pl. of this word in generibus is stated as archaic; the root is ‘gen’ and the word derives from the verb gigno [gigno, genui, genitum 3, to produce, bring forth, give rise (or birth) to, bear, beget,engender] (Lewis & Short).

Compare the adj. congener, congenera, congenerum (adj.A), q.v.: (classically) “(of a plant) belonging to the same family} [> L. con + gener,-ri (s.m. irreg.) “applied to a prospective son-in-law; extended to remoter generations” (Glare), i.e. within the family or gens].]]

Congener,-eris (s.m.irreg.), q.v.: (classically) a joint son-in-law.

Progener,-eri (s.m.II): a sister’s husband, brother-in-law (Lewis & Short); a granddaughter’s husband, a grandson-in-law: acc.sg. ‘progenerum.’
