A Grammatical Dictionary of Botanical Latin

Gelatin, jelly; “in plants, confined to albumen-like bodies, which are tough, viscid, and scarcely soluble in water” (Jackson); (fungi) “gelatin, a substance from bones or other animal tissue used to make culture media into gels which are, however, liquified by certain bacteria and fungi; cf. agar” (Ainsworth & Bisby); “animal jelly: glutinous material obtained from animal tissues by prolonged boiling; any of various substances (as agar) resembling gelatin in physical properties (vegetable gelatins)” (WIII): gelatina,-ae (s.f.I), abl. sg. gelatina; also [in pharmaceutical Latin] gelatinum,-i (s.n.II), abl. sg. gelatino; substantia,-ae (s.f.I) gelinea [> L. gelatus,-a,-um (part.A), q.v.]; cf. mucilage, a slimy exudate; cf. mucus,-i (s.m.II), abl. sg. muco, nasal mucus and secretions that resemble mucus; “gummy matter soluble in water” (Lindley); see gel; see gum; cf. mucus,-i (s.m.II), q.v., “gummy matter soluble in water” (Lindley); see agar; see gel;

- [lichen] gelatina hymenea iodo coerulescens (Nyl.), the hymeneal gelatin turning blue in iodine.

- fronde ut madefacta, ita facillime dissolventi ut in gelatinam, with a frond that when moistened, thus very easily dissolves as into a jelly (gelatine).

- adolescentes gelatina fluxili turgent, the adolescent (fungi) swell with a fluid jelly.

- ostiola elongata, setacea, in exemplis plurimis glebula pendula gelatinae induratae sordide flavicantis subglobosa vel irregulari coronata (S&A), the ostiole elongate, setaceous, in most specimens crowned with a pendulous nearly globose or irregular glebule [i.e. small lump] of the dirty yellowish hardened gelatin.

- gelatina in globulos indurascente, nec in farinam illico soluta (S&A), the gelatine hardening into globules, not immediately breaking up into a dust [i.e. a meal or flour].

- vera sese ostia seminis emissioni destinata, nec spuria ex ipsa gelatina seminifera appendicula esse confirmant (S&A), proven to be true ostia in themselves intended for the emission of a seed, not false appendages composed from the seminiferous gelatine itself.

- (fungus) ramulo putri alneo increscens egregie vigebat, sphaerulis gelatina sua turgentibus, in umbrosis muscosis (S&A), it grew remarkably on putrid Alnus branchlets, with the sphearules swollen with their own jelly, in mossy, shaded [sc. places].

- [fungi] exempla saepe vernalia vidimus gelatina, nunc fluxili, nunc in glebam ceream coagulata(S&A), we have often seen vernal [i.e. spring-time] specimens with a gelatine, sometimes fluxile, sometimes coagulated into a waxen clump.

Gelatina hymenea (adj.A)(sic] “a gelatinous substance surrounding the asci and paraphyses in some Lichens (Leighton)” (Jackson); see licheninum,-i (s.n.II);

- [lichen] hymenium seu thecium contentum hypothecii indicat; thalamium thecasque complectitur et materia gummosa, lichenina, perfunditur, quam gelatinam hymeneam nominavi (Nyl.), the [sc. word] hymenium or thecium indicates the content of the hypothecium; it surrounds the thalamium and thecas and is soaked in a gummy material, licheninum, which I have called the hymenean gelatine.

Gelatinum,-i (s.n.II), abl. sg. gelatino: in pharmaceutical Latin, gelatin.

Gelinea,-ae (s.f.I), nom. pl. gelineae: “cells in Algals secreting vegetable jelly” (Lindley).

Phycomater,-tris (s.f.III), phycomatre, nom. & acc. pl. phycomatres, gen. pl. phycomatrum, dat. & abl. pl. phycomatribus: “the gelatine in which the sporules of Algals first vegetate” (Lindley).

(fungi) the genus Gelatina = Tremella, q.v.; Gelatinodiscus; Gelatinosporium.

A work in progress, presently with preliminary A through R, and S, and with S (in part) through Z essentially completed.
