A Grammatical Dictionary of Botanical Latin

 
gaster-, gastero-, gastro-: in Gk. comp; -gaster,-teris (s.[m.]f.III); -gastra,-ae (s.f.I): a noun in Greek compounds, 'belly' [> Gk. gaster (long eta), anatomical belly; a big-bellied vessel];

- Hemigaster; Hymenogaster; Hysterogaster; Phyllogaster; Phallogaster.

Chaetogastra,-ae: “from chaite, bristle + gaster, a belly; alluding to the tube of the calyx being covered with hairy scales (Melastomaceae” (Paxton).

Gasteria,-ae (s.f.I): “derived grom ‘gaster,’ the belly; alluding to the enlarged base of the flowers. Liliaceae” (Paxton).

Gastrolobium,-ii (s.n.II): “from gaster, the belly + lobos, a pod; the pods are inflated. Fabaceae” (Paxton).

Gastronema,-atis (s.n.III): “from gaster, the belly + nema, a filament; the filaments are inflated. Amaryllidaceae” (Paxton).

Phallogaster,-gastri (s.m.II), abl. sg. Phallogastro, apparently declined as a second declension masc.; P. saccatus Morgan.

Stenogaster (Cyrtandraceae).

Desmoscolex chaetogaster, a nematode; Drosophila melanogaster > Gk. melas ‘dark-colored’ + gastEr, belly, a fruit-fly.
