A Grammatical Dictionary of Botanical Latin

 
Gall, gall-nut, or oak-apple, an abnormal growth caused by insects or fungi; “a gall; a tumor usually woody, produced by the puncture of an insect” (Lindley): galla,-ae (s.f.I), abl.sg. galla.

Cecidium,-ii (s.n.II), q.v., abl.sg. cecidio: “the galls produced by Fungi or insects, the consequence of infection being an abnormal growth” (Jackson)[> Gk. kEkis,-idos (s.f.III: “a gall” (Jackson); “matter that oozes or exudes from a burnt sacrifice: juice, moisture” (Liddell & Scott).

Spongia (or spongea),-ae (s.f.I): a sponge; a growth on some roses caused by the gall-wasp, bedeguar-gall.

Podapion gallicola (pine gall-weevil), Nectria galligena (a fungus), Gnorimoschema gallaesolidaginis (goldenrod gall-moth) (Brown 1956).
